Locking washers prevent fastener loosening by preventing unscrewing rotation of the fastening device. Split washers have a split and are bent into a helical shape, which causes the washer to exert a spring force between the fastener’s head and material. This creates friction and rotation resistance. Split washers are ideal for light vibration applications.
Hi-collar washers are thick split lock washers and are ideal for small spaces. Tooth lock washers have twisted prongs or “teeth” which extend out from the inner or outer edge of the washer. External tooth washers require a large head and are ideal when the need for loosening resistance is the greatest. Internal tooth washers are ideal with small screw heads and when the teeth need to be concealed for appearances.
